No, I’m not talking about two slices of white bread with a kraft single in the middle. Although there is something oddly comforting about one of those sandwiches with a cup of tomato soup. We eat a lot of grilled cheese around here, so I am always trying to switch things up. A while back a friend had us over for lunch and opened up a whole new world or grilled cheese. Since then, I try to switch up some of the ingredients to keep things interesting. Below is a favorite.
(Italian Bread, Black Forrest Ham, Swiss Cheese, and Granny Smith Apples. Kale Salad on the side.)
There isn’t always a rhyme or reason to the combinations we come up with. Turkey Breast, Havarti Cheese, and Pesto is another favorite. The possibilities are endless. This is always a quick and easy dinner that we have every week or two.
Ingredients:
Any Artisan Bread – Italian, Multi-grain, Sourdough, etc…
Butter (I prefer spray butter).
Black Forrest Ham – Sliced Thin
Swiss Cheese
Granny Smith Apples – Sliced. They do not have to be peeled.
Method:
- Spray one side of each slice of bread with the spray butter. Or use a thin coat of spreadable butter.
- Layer ham, cheese, and apples on the bread, and then place the other slice of bread on top.
- Using a skillet over medium heat, heat the sandwich until lightly browned on one side. Then flip and brown on the other side. The cheese doesn’t need to be oozing, but it should be pretty soft and a little gooey.
- Serve with a side of chips, salad, fries, soup, or whatever else you can come up with. I have been using the recipe for a kale salad that I found here.
- ENJOY!
Side note: If you are looking for a quick and simple tomato soup, our favorite can be found here. While we do not purchase it by the case from Amazon, you can find single cans at Whole Foods. It is super smooth and tasty. Both HP and T love it. Plus, it is so easy to just heat and serve.

That all sounds so good! My people refuse to eat grilled cheese, but maybe the apples would entice =)
